Issues involving the analysis and assessment of the efficiency of socio-economic systems are becoming increasingly important and urgent in the modern state structure. An objective assessment of the managerial actions of federal and regional authorities is essential to the reliable functioning of systems of various levels and areas of human operation. The article presents an overview of the main methodological approaches to the study of socio-economic systems. The general theoretical principles of analysis are listed, as well as a brief description of the methods determining their features, direction and applied significance in modern research practices. A great many of the techniques used originate from various scientific fields, and have a reasoned basis and an extensive history of practical application. The approaches and instruments are combined and synthesized, creating a synergistic effect and widening the field for practical research activities in all spheres. The diagram shows a certain general classification of methods by their typical appurtenance, position and mutual influence. Statistical methods that have an extensive history of application in various scientific fields are brought together and compose the basis of research. Expert methods may represent a quite independent research unit, but they could not account for the entire range of problems arising in the study of socio-economic systems. Based largely on the results of examinations and significantly expanding and supplementing them, the various methods of intelligent data processing often function interdisciplinarily, and as a rule, are computerized.
